I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down – Nehemiah 6:3
Four times Nehemiah’s enemies tried to bring him down, and each time he said “No, I’m doing a great work and I cannot come down.” There are times in your life when you are vulnerable and the enemy will try to bring you down. First, when you’re exhausted. My wife tells me I have no limits where work is concerned, and I’ve paid a high price for it. Jesus said, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). When we wear yokes He never designed for us and burdens He never gave us, we get into trouble. Another vulnerable point is when you’re successful and everyone around you is telling you so.
Be careful–pride will bring you down faster than anything, for it makes you play God in your own life. Another point of vulnerability is when you’re alone. Peter was alone when he denied his lord. David was alone in his palace when he saw Bathsheba. You need fellowship. David said, “God sets the solitary in families” (Psalm 68:6). The Living Bible says, “He gives families to the lonely.” Make sure you’re in a spiritual family that will feed you and fellowship with you, and then you need to tell the devil, “I’m doing a great work, and I can’t come down.”
