Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23, NIV
Every morning when you wake up, there are two forces that will immediately seek to control your life. They will speak to you, influence you, and try to direct your steps: the flesh and the spirit. Every day, including today, you’ll have to make a choice between them.
When my carnal mind suggests, “Man that looks good, go for it,” I know it’s time to take control of that thought, before it takes control of me and gets me into trouble. I know about the pitfalls of life, because I’ve been in them, and I never want to go back there again. But I’ll automatically drift that way if I don’t decide to walk with God, live by the Word, and submit to the Spirit. How about you?
There is only one way to bring your carnal impulses into subjection, and that’s to declare the Word over them. I literally say, “My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and I have been called to glorify God today in everything I do.” (see 1 Cor. 6:19). Like any new habit, it takes time and repeated effort to become comfortable and consistent in it. But each time you bring yourself into alignment with the Word, your spirit becomes stronger and the flesh weaker. Today, by God’s help, you will be able to guard your heart.
