“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8
One Bible commentator defines a pure heart as “A heart that’s trusting God; and attitude that is not mixed with doubt or carnality; a focus that is single.” When I read those words I cried: “God give me a heart like that! A pure heart that can see You in every situation, regardless of the circumstances-a pure heart that can see the potential for a miracle, even when everything is falling apart.”
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow before the king’s idols. When he threatened them with the fiery furnace, they answered from pure hearts, “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, 0 king. But if not … we will not serve thy gods” (Daniel 3:17-18).
A pure heart can handle the “but if not’s.” If that job doesn’t come through, if that loved one doesn’t come back, if your health isn’t restored, it still says, “I will serve the Lord.” David said “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly [with pure hearts]” (Psalm 84:11). Today, ask Him to give you a pure heart, an unmixed faith and a single focus.
